From Dog World Irish Soft Coated Wheaten breed notes

I CANNOT help but be glad that my days of dog breeding and showing are coming to an end rather than just beginning. With all the regulations that are likely to be imposed it will no longer be the hobby it once was although I would say it has not been that for some time.

The dictates that will no longer allow close matings would have meant that most breeds would not have been established. In Wheatens we don’t have to go back many generations to see the matings of father to daughter, mother to son and brother to sister.

I must say when I bought my first wheaten and looked at the pedigree I thought there must have been a mistake when I saw the close matings that had taken place. However that is how the breed as we know it was established and for many years we all practised fairly close breeding due to the limits of the gene pool available and the preference for the type which had developed in this country.

We are all influenced by our own experiences and I have to say the only time I out crossed I had a litter with three bad mouths in it and a dog with an undescended testicle. Ironic as I had used the particular dog as I thought he had a lovely head with great big teeth.

I know one of the early imports was brought in to help with a perceived problem only to find that in many of his progeny the problem turned out to be much worse – much to the disappointment of the importer. So out crossing is not the answer to everything as we all know. Let’s hope common sense prevails and although it is understandable that father/daughter, brother/sister matings may not be registered let’s hope breeders will still have the option to produce the pups they want.

However whatever happens in our little world is really of little significance when one considers that the vast majority of people breeding dogs have no interest in breed Standards or shows and the public have no interest in pedigrees other than saying that their dog has one.

I could have written this piece myself.

Another interesting fact:

The Winning Sealyham has one dog, Am Ch Torset Touch of Class (imp UK) seven times in his 5 generation pedigree.
