Memphis Belle är smeknamnet på ett Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress , ett bombflygplan, som blev berömt när dess besättning lyckades flyga 25 uppdrag över Europa och återvända hem till USA under andra världskriget. Det sista uppdraget flögs 17 maj 1943. Flygplanet finns fortfarande kvar och visas på museum.

Namnet Memphis Belle kom sig av piloten Robert K. Morgans flickvän som kom från just Memphis, Tennesseee. Det målades också en traditionsenlig pinupbild på planets nos, blå baddräkt på babords sida och röd på styrbords!


Besättningen


Vem var då Stuka? Jo, planets enda kvinnliga passagerare....

Kapten Jim Verinis fann den skotska terriern i en djuraffär i London, blev ögonblickligen förälskad och tog med sig den lilla hunden tillbaka till flottiljen, Stuka blev besättningens maskot och ansågs föra tur med sig.


Stuka var mycket omtyckt och skämdes bort i kantinen och soldaterna turades om att få ha henne med sig i sängen. Hon skrevs även in i besättningslistan och fick efter krigets slut turnera runt hela USA tillsammans med grabbarna som kom att bli mycket populära i sitt hemland.


Stuka levde sedan resten av sitt liv tillsammans med Jim Verinis och dennes familj på en gård.
